The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 didn’t just get a redesign this year — it got a whole new flagship model in the ZR2, a trim designed specifically for off-roading.
The Silverado ZR2 boasts specialized upgrades like large underbody aluminum skid plates, off-road calibration to its chassis and suspension, and a steel front bumper that allows for an improved approach angle. It also features Terrain Mode, so you can rock crawl with only one pedal, and the first Multimatic DSSV™ dampers ever used on a Silverado.
Before its release, Chevrolet entered a prototype Silverado ZR2 in the Best in the Desert off-road racing event. According to Dom Lester, General Motors’ chief engineer of Performance Variants, Parts and Motorsports Engineering, “We applied what we learned in racing and Moab testing to the new ZR2 to offer a supremely capable and confidence-inspiring package, but one that doesn’t beat you up on the highway with its ride quality. It’s equally capable and comfortable.”
The ZR2 is easily recognizable from the outside too, with a unique grille and “flow-tie” emblem, as well as a black hood insert. The interior has been redesigned with special leather trimmings, a more spacious layout, and a standard 13.4-inch infotainment screen.
